# Connect Box and migrate your files

---

**Last updated:** October 17, 2026

---

Connect your Box account to FakeParrot, choose folders to copy into your company
wiki, and let the server finish the move after you close your browser. Your files
stay in Box. You need a FakeParrot company account, permission to manage migrations,
and a Box account that can read and download the files you want to copy.

## Connect your account

1. Open [Connections](/app/settings/connections?connect=box) in FakeParrot and
   choose **Connect with Box**.
2. Sign in to the Box account containing your files and grant access.
3. Choose who can use the connection and which source folders it covers. Box
connections start private; sharing imported wiki content is a separate choice.
4. Open [Settings → Migration](/app/settings/migration) and select the connection.

**Why Box asks for read/write permission:** Box requires its `root_readwrite`
OAuth scope to download original files. FakeParrot's Box connector and migration
read and copy content; they do not edit or delete your Box originals. An older
read-only connection must be reconnected to grant download permission. Refreshing
its token does not widen the original grant.

If your Box enterprise blocks the connection, ask its Box admin to enable
**FakeParrot (Macaw)** under the enterprise's integration controls. The public
client ID is `r86f48a1upsbp2juep9iuc1gicbrncd4`. Customers do not need to create
a developer app or supply FakeParrot with a client secret. Box enterprise policies
can require admin enablement even for a published integration.

## Choose what to copy

Map each selected Box folder to a destination wiki folder. Check the destination's
audience before starting: **Box collaborators are not copied.** A destination
shared with more people gives those people access to the imported content.
The live Box connection keeps its own access settings.

Preview the move to see the inventory, file sizes, items above the current upload
limit, conflicts, and estimated AI summary cost alongside your company's daily AI
budget. An incomplete inventory identifies the folders that could not be listed.
Resolve those gaps or use the report to track what remains uncopied.

| Box content | What arrives in FakeParrot |
|---|---|
| Folders and downloadable files within the upload limit | Wiki folders and files at the selected destination |
| Box Notes | Wiki pages for supported content; the original file when conversion cannot preserve it |
| Web links | Wiki pages containing the link and description |
| Older versions, comments, tasks and shared links | Not copied |
| Collaborators | Not copied; the wiki destination's permissions apply |

## Start and follow the result

Start the previewed run, then close the browser if you want. Return to
[Migration](/app/settings/migration) to see progress, run history, item results,
and an export. The completion email links to the result. Copying files and
extracting text or generating summaries have separate progress states.

Cancel stops further work and keeps files already copied. Retry recoverable
failures from the results. **Run again** inventories Box afresh and catches up with
changes without copying unchanged content again. Destination edits produce
conflicts for you to resolve; removing a file from Box does not delete its wiki copy.

## Troubleshooting and help

For expired or revoked access, reconnect the same Box account from Connections.
For a download permission failure, reconnect an older read-only grant first. If
it still fails, check that the Box user can download that particular file and that
its enterprise policies allow the operation. A denied file does not mean every
file in the connection is inaccessible.

Email [support@fakeparrot.com](mailto:support@fakeparrot.com) with the migration's
run link and the reported error. Do not send tokens or client secrets.
See our [Privacy Policy](/privacy), [Terms](/terms), and
[AI Data Policy](/legal/ai-data-policy) for how FakeParrot handles imported data.
